Recommended Albums: March 2024

Apologies for the delay once again – there was A LOT of great music out in March! I even broke through the 10-album goal and listed 12. From surprise AOTY contenders, to newcomers, to reliable favorites, March 2024 had it all, plus a ton of great tunes that come off albums I don’t feature below, but list in the GR8 SONGS segment! Don’t miss it!

Adrianne Lenker – Bright Future [4AD]
A sleet grey sky and harsh cold wind cannot stifle the optimism felt when seeing the first buds of spring start to emerge, and the shreds of muted sunlight breaking through the dreary exterior.

Amaro Freitas – Y’Y [Psychic Hotline]
The near-infinite amount of pebbles found on a remote beach once comprised something much larger, much older and much wiser than what we can comprehend. Its consciousness now exists scattered and its influence is no less felt.

Bobbie Lovesong – Shadow of a Cloud [self-released]
A dollhouse that was abandoned by a swamp is now inhabited by a very cute frog family and their little mousey friends. Sun shines through the little windows as they smell the crisp spring air warm.

Bolis Pupul – Letter To Yu [DEEWEE / Because]
Crossing a bridge and looking out at the two parts of the city separated by the river, but realizing that the bridge has started to wrap around the city, showing off parts and angles of the illuminated city skyline that you hadn’t seen before, glittering with activity.

Cindy Lee – Diamond Jubilee [Realistik]
Riding by Greyhound across the high plains of Canada to different mining town dive bars in the 80s that haven’t been renovated since the 50s, to perform open mics and karaoke. Your time spent with gruff regulars and looking at the vast emptiness of the prairie with nothing but one suitcase and dwindling payphone money echoes within you.

Discovery Zone – Quantum Web [RVNG Intl]
Being treated to an online shopping experience where you aren’t assaulted with pop-ups, except for one that threads your being into a string of code that harmoniously exists amongst a limitless array of oscillating digits and numerals.

Julia Holter – Something in the Room She Moves [Domino]
Finding enlightenment in the perfect piece of furniture in your sunroom, accessing interplanetary knowledge now that you’re properly aligned with the cosmos.

Kim Gordon – The Collective [Matador]
Radiation from cellphone batteries or satellites or whatever we were worries about 20 years ago is true and our faces will soon turn into red, blistered, weeping husks as we scroll for a third hour straight.

Konradsen – Michael’s Book on Bears [777 Music]
The sweetest memories of each season, distilled. Lay out flat in a wide-open, indoor space on a dreary day to trip into the most vivid memories of your past.

Reyna Tropical – Malegría [Psychic Hotline]
Light rainstorms at dawn pass through the corridors of an island town’s nightlong street party, where revelers continue their dancing unabated, the street decorations no less vibrant, and the music no less vital to that community’s lifeblood.

Rosali – Bite Down [Merge]
Kicking open a door both out of excitement and after being frankly fed up with some bullshit.

1010benja – Ten Total [Three Six Zero]
Shadowboxing in a mirror after it seemed like every force of nature has tried to hold you back, but you proved them wrong.
