Check out my favorite releases from June 2023 – four of which made it into my Favorite Albums of 2023 So Far, in case you haven’t seen that. It’s a good one!

There are a few more albums from this month that were on my list to listen to like Youth Lagoon, Joanna Sternberg and Squid, but just didn’t get the chance to listen before wanting to get this out. Who knows, maybe they’ll have a redemption arc and make my Top 50 at the end of the year?

Regardless – there are some fantastic records below. Not sure how I feel about a reissue of old music being my favorite record of the year, but the Arthur Russell Picture of Bunny Rabbit is just that good.

Anthony Naples – Orbs [ANS Recordings]
Sat atop a distant mountain, a camouflaged dome; its walls covered in suspended plants, all connected together by sensors and nodes, emitting a constantly morphing energy field in the dome’s center.

Arthur Russell – Picture of Bunny Rabbit [Audika]
Finding something you’d lost long ago underneath a pile you’d meant to get rid of. The found object immediately fills the room with a breezy, pleasant fragrance that instantly reminds you of better times.

Decisive Pink – Ticket To Fame [Fire Records]
Every mid-season “goofy” anime episode stitched into a supercut, where characters are thrust into odd situations to ease the creeping tension from the incoming, climactic finale.

Feeble Little Horse – Girl With Fish [Saddle Creek]
Being strapped down and made to watch satisfying industrial grinder videos but on every 10th video something thrown into the machine makes it explode.

Hayden Pedigo – The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored [Mexican Summer]
Reading a memoir of a passed famous person you didn’t know before starting the book, but slowly recognizing the parallels between your life and theirs, giving you closure on stray anxieties.

Jam City – Jam City Presents EFM [Earthly / Mad Decent]
A sea of really attractive people star in a commercial for an elite gym membership. Lights pulsate, muscles flex, sweat drips. The camera zooms out, and the gym is located on the spire of a super-tall skyscraper.

John Carroll Kirby – Blowout [Stones Throw]
Riding your bike on the outskirts of a stadium at dusk on a humid summer evening, feeling the wind fill up the back of your shirt like a sail, the massive cheers from the stadium egg you on, the massive lights casting dramatic shadows from afar.

Sweeping Promises – Good Living Is Coming For You [Sub Pop]
Throwing a drink in someone’s face with the power of Inspector Gadget-like spring-loaded arms.

Water Damage – 2 Songs [12XU]
The war march guitar rig from Mad Max experiments in the desert on long, unending drives.
