Another late but better than never installment of Recommended Albums. Thankfully for me, my wedding month was a plump bouquet of fantastic records, ones I anticipate landing high within my year-end favorites in December.

Out of everything, the YHWH Nailgun and Chuquimamani-Condori + Joshua Chuquimia Crampton records were the most-played for the month, with Cross Record not too far behind. What can I say, this year needs records that bend the fabric of time and reality, challenging our ersatz world with both visions of it at its worse and its prospective best.

And PS – this is the first Recommended Albums of 2025 with little descriptions! I’m back, baby! Just took four months!

Chuquimamani-Condori & Joshua Chuquimia Crampton – Los Thuthanaka [self-released]
The sonic crumbling, combustion and implosion of this world as we know it, and the rebirth of the new world, one that shines bright. The first sunbeam in a rain cloud-filled sky.

Circuit des Yeux – Halo On The Inside [Matador]
A humanoid figure emerges from the darkness of a harsh shadow cast on a sunny day; its long, snaking arms reach out into the sunlight looking for meaning.

Cross Record – Crush Me [Ba Da Bing!]
The faceprint of someone who recently died appears in a local park’s fresh soil after the first spring rain, their face appears later that same day in a cloud formation.

Destroyer – Dan’s Boogie [Merge]
A man approaches your group of buddies from out of the fog and proposes a night unlike any other. Sure enough, he takes you on a bewildering journey to places that have existed under your nose but have never noticed, then vanishes just as fast as he appeared.

Hiroshi Yoshimura – Flora 1987 (Reissue) [Temporal Drift]
Pollen released by flowers allows them to access a network of communication, their inner mechanisms joyfully lighting up like switchboards as they reconnect with all their friends again after a long winter.

Japanese Breakfast – For Melancholy Brunettes (and sad women) [Dead Oceans]
A lost sailor floating adrift at sea, feeling comforted by the memories of those once closest to them, intertwined with stifling loneliness and longing.

Marina Zispin – Now You See Me, Now You Don’t [Scenic Route]
After going into a hibernation in a Williamsburg loft in 2012, two vampires awaken and move to Miami to brood in luxe locations in original their American Apparel cloaks.

More Eaze & claire rousay – no floor [Thrill Jockey]
Finding old super 8 film of your mom on a swing set at sunset, double exposed with footage of a long train passing through an intersection.

SPELLLING – Portrait of My Heart [Sacred Bones]
A teenage fantasy princess that’s been trapped in a tall tower for years has composed an epic musical about not someone coming to save her, but more the power of rock grants her the powers to bust out of the tower on her own.

Tobacco City – Horses [Scissor Tail]
An early Saturday morning with warm sunlight kissing dew-covered grasses, glistening amongst a blue sky. 

YHWH Nailgun – 45 Pounds [AD 93]
The sounds a body makes after being crushed by a 10 ton industrial weight, bones smeared into a dusty paste, once-flowing arteries wheezing, a remaining lifetime of air exhausted.
