Recommended Albums: October 2024

Not as late this time! And hey – Recommended Albums of October 2024 had a good reason for being delayed. Unless I miscounted (very likely), I’m featuring 17 albums below. That’s a good amount! And there were still more records from last month that I’ve been meaning to listen to, and would probably find their way on this list if I had! But this has been delayed enough as is! 17 is good enough for you, you voracious animals!

Some really incredible records below, though. At least four on here I’ve absolutely rinsed on walks around the city: Caribou, Confidence Man, Kelly Lee Owens & Two Shell. The classic electronic record to blast to inject some pep into step. Also just some shocking beauty, some much-needed follow-ups, and a key various artists compilation from Music From Memory, a label that has been rising QUICKLY in labels I just love anything and everything from. Elite.

Best of 2024 season is quickly approaching! Hoping to get all that stuff to you in a timely manner. Thanks for reading!

Blood Incantation – Absolute Elsewhere [Century Media / Stargate Research]
A person goes insane trying to find an alternate dimension they’ve spent their whole life researching. They end up entering a portal taking them there, and go fully insane, but uses their remaining wits to help them find their way back to their reality.

Caribou – Honey [Merge]
A mad scientist has made a spacecraft fueled purely by club dancers, their body heat helping launch the invention, in the shape of the inventors head, into deep space.

Caroline Says – The Lucky One [Western Vinyl]
Each window of the house lets in a bold ray of golden sunset light during a three-week stretch of late fall.

Confidence Man – 3AM (LA LA LA) [Polydor / I Oh You]
A genie grants your wish to be transported back to an early 00s trance rave but in return takes half of your braincells. You have an even better time than when you had brains.

Dawn Richard & Spencer Zahn – Quiet In A World Full of Noise [Merge]
Coils of fog and wind whirl around you, protection from an icestorm of pain.

Fievel Is Glauque – Rong Weicknes [Fat Possum]
A person you know explains everything like the person NEEDS to understand what they’re talking about immediately, not realizing how complex the personal lore, longform equations, spacetime physics, knowledge of tradewind patterns, etc are needed to baseline understand.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor – “No Title as of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead” [Constellation]
No description as of 24 November 2024 44,970 dead. Free Palestine.

Hildegard – Jour 1596 [Chivi Chivi]
Projecting your dreams onto everyday hollow plastics, lining a damp back alley with them.

Kelly Lee Owens – Dreamstate [DH2]
A late-night speedbike ride through smooth, rolling hills in a centuries-passed post-cataclysmic landscape, the lights of thousands of fireflies smear into streaks in the periphery of your vision, the bioluminescence shining for miles.

Laura Marling – Patterns In Repeat [Chrysalis / Partisan]
After a family party, you stay away, sitting by the fire. Laughter and tears from years past still echo in everyday objects.

Moin – You Never End [AD 93]
Eternally slate skies emit a dull light off the spindly, steel spikes that protrude out of your spine, grown out of self-protection in a boring world.

Molina – When You Wake Up [Escho]
You come across a crumbled structure, haphazard piles of marble and granite indicate a grand design. Peering through the cracks in the rubble, you realize it’s sitting upon a seemingly bottomless well.

Shovel Dance Collective – The Shovel Dance [American Dreams]
The stoic silence and tradition that comes with looking out upon a great plain.

Two Shell – Two Shell [Young]
Similar to the underground fungal network, rogue viruses, abandoned government self-aware AI programs banished to dark corners of the web, and shattered files connect and communicate with each other in all of our devices, unbeknownst to us.

Underworld – Strawberry Hotel [Smith Hyde Productions]
City lights, pulsating energy, hurtling transport, pure movement underscore the power of the people.

Various Artists – Virtual Dreams II: Ambient Explorations in the House & Techno Age, Japan 1993-1999 [Music From Memory]
Cool essential oils waft in from an unknown dispenser. Healthy fronds of some tropical plants encroach on your personal space, growing from an oversized planter. Lazy early afternoon sunlight drips in from an elevated loft window. The clacking keys of your computer keyboard are masked by the delicate trickle of a water feature positioned in the corner of the salon. With one or two more security bypasses, you should be into the mainframe in no time.

Yasmin Williams – Acadia [Nonesuch]
Hiking the to the top of a mountain and capturing the cinematic view, the arduous journey proven to be worth it.
