Recommended Albums: September 2016

Holy smokes, we’re out of the cruel summer. Not only are we out, but we’re doing it in a big way. September was the finest month of music this year since May, providing a staggering surplus of excellent releases to keep me fat & happy and to make up for the great drought of June – August. A lot of these records don’t need my words to sell them for you, like Angel Olsen, Danny Brown & LVL UP. But you should read my words anyways. Or don’t. But you should definitely listen to the music, because that’s the most important part. The takeaway. The meat and potatoes. The garlic on the bread. The real heebie-jeebies. The point of all of this nonsense. Ok enough of that, here we go.

Vesuvio Solo – “Mirror Held To The Flower” [2016]

Holy smokes. Are you ready to feel sensual at your computer desk and/or to your phone screen? Then smack the dang play button on this hot track.

Montreal band Vesuvio Solo are releasing their new album Don’t Leave Me In The Dark this Friday (Sept. 30) and as of now the whole thing is streaming over on Gorilla Vs. Bear, but I wanted to bring attention to the second single from the record, “Mirror Held To The Flower.” It’s got such a simple, luscious groove that has had me hooked all day and easily situated itself into my “loop this forever” folder. Silky smooth, easy riding, low-lit, pulsating grooves. Now that’s some good eating.

The whole album has material like this, but this one sticks out in a special way for me. I highly recommend checking the album out and giving these dudes your time, especially for fans of Ice Choir/Roman A Clef, TOPS or Mr Twin Sister.

Recommended Albums: August 2016

img_5596

It seemed like 2016 screeched to a halt during the month of August: the heat was unbearable, the news was a continued spiral of despair, my headphones only sometimes worked in both ears, and maybe worst of all, the well of good music had almost gone dry. August was an embarrassing cap on possibly the weakest summer of music in recent memory. Status wasn’t good. 2016 was rough already and now this August had to happen? We as a people did not deserve it. Or maybe we did? One too many Harambe memes or op-ed hot takes pushed the King Of All Cosmos out of our favor and now we’re paying the price. Either way, here are some records that I liked from August.

Heathered Pearls – “Holographic Lodge” [2015]

Reminder that this Heathered Pearls album is one of the best from 2015, especially if you’re into downtempo electronic with a lot of ambiance to it. Stuff that’s slow, hypnotic, building.

Recommended Albums: July 2016

The month of July saw a lot of action, I gotta say. I moved to NYC, my girlfriend came back to the US after a year abroad in Paris, then moved to Washington DC, my parents got really into gin & tonics, among other things. It also saw the release of some of my top favorite albums of the year from artists like Clams Casino, The Avalanches, Cole MGN & Omni. Don’t break the chain, they say. Here’s my favorite albums from July 2016.

Recommended Albums: June 2016

Another month, another group of great records. After combing through and remembering what June had to offer, I think it pales in comparison to some of the other months we’ve seen so far. Obviously the Whitney and Mitski albums are great, but others have some nuance to them. You’ll see I’m not totally positive about all the albums on this list, some coming close to something of a negative review. I’m not one to do that. But thankfully, July has blessed us with some of my tippity-top favorites. Lovely. But for now, here’s what I loved the most in June 2016.

Yoo-Yoo – “Eye Of The Eye” [2016]

God damn this track bumps. Featuring members of Korallreven. These dudes need to put out more material ASAP. Totally fun and feeling good.

The River Empires – “Overture In Thales Summer” [2010]

This song has some of the most shockingly beautiful vocal harmonies I’ve ever heard. This includes all dimensions of music – classical, pop, ambient, whatever. You know when something feels so good that you go crazy a bit? Well that’s what’s going on here. It’s painfully euphoric.  The rest of the song is pretty great too, but just listen for the harmonies.

The rest of the record is great as well. It’s supposed to be the soundtrack to a trilogy of films, but I’m not sure if that ever came together. I feel like it’s one of those albums that’s a buried treasure, waiting to be rediscovered and loved all over again. I only discovered it this year – not sure how, but I’m glad it crossed my path.

2016 So Far :: Overlooked

IMG_5374

The term “overlooked” is so incredibly subjective. I love that about the word. Almost anything could be considered “overlooked,” it all depends on the beholder. But like these are for sure objectively overlooked. There is no debate. They’re all things that I don’t see enough about on my news feeds. They’re all things that I don’t hear my friends talk about enough. They’re all records that are really damn good and it’s possible that you might have missed them in the rapid stream of records that flows without an end.
