Sales – S/T EP

What we have here is a delightful EP from Orlando, FL that I saw on Gorilla Vs. Bear Best of 2014 list. It’s luscious dream pop with simple melodies and underhandedly catchy choruses. The longest song on here is a little over three minutes, so the whole thing is quick and easy to get through. My favorite track is probably “Getting It On.” Gonna be looking out for this band in the future!

Beyoncé – “***Flawless (feat. Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche)”

You already know, but like, I dunno. Music like this really is helping bring to light some alarming trends, all while being goddamn fantastic and catchy and pop-centric. It’s kinda hard to imagine a world without Beyoncé.

Four Tet – “Parallel Jalebi (Hudson Mohawke Remix)”

I mean honestly the most interesting parts of this track are the ones that Four Tet put down initially, but I really like what HudMo did with it as a whole. Makes up for the yawn-fest of Chimes. Looking forward to more new material, though.

Mica Levi – “Love”

I haven’t even seen this film [Under The Skin] but this one song from the soundtrack is just too good. Made by the usually wacky and poppy Mica Levi AKA Micachu, this track is the perfect representation of a dark, inhumane thought process, completely born out of a mechanical, calculated computer brain. Streetlights passing over glass eyes. Grip on steering wheel. Spotless car.

Wave Racer – “Streamers” [2014]

Hey so for some reason I totally forgot that this song came out in 2014 and excluded it in all my decision making when it came time for list creation. WOOF.

Well, if I could go back in time and rethink my Top 50 Songs, this would definitely be on it. The award it would get would be Song I Could Get The Most Ignorant To. These ignorant things were not because exorbitant amounts of alcohol, cause that’s not my style, but silly levels were at the maximum with this song being played really loud.

One example in particular was my last show of my 2014 spring semester where I was inebriated on air. I was playing all my favorite party hits and sending incoherent snaps to people, cause I was alone on a Friday night at the radio station. I had a great time though. Not so much in the morning though. Oops.

Anyways, this song is incredible. As someone who was raised on Nintendo and other video games, this song is like seeing all your best friends from high school have a blast with all your college friends. BADASS.

Best Of 2014 :: 50 Songs

bestsongs2014

Yeah I know. Do I do anything else besides arbitrarily rank music and then put it into a list? Frankly, no. But I do it for your enjoyment, people of the internet. I did this for YOU! I actually really did this for myself, but whatever.

This year I’d like to show you the product of the very painful process of whittling down my favorite songs to just 50 (I somehow went down to 40 last year, of all years. How did I do that? I am a madman.) Despite it being a rather disappointing year compared to the last few, there were some absolutely stellar songs that I’ve imbued meaning into that I’d like to talk about here. I’m giving each one a little award with each one, so I want to ask all the bands in the audience to line up and accept your awards as your names are called… You should have received a certificate in the mail.

A lot of these songs have college semantics added to that. Probably cause I’m graduating in May. Daamn. ALSO: I liked songs other than these, you dingus. I listened to a lot of shit this year. Here’s a Spotify playlist if you really want to get into it.

I’ll pick five songs that were my SOTY. You’ll see them.

Hope everyone enjoys it!

1. Adebisi ShankMazel TovBest Song For Funky, Muscly Robots
The first time I heard this song I kept getting blown away by different aspects of the song: the funky-ass guitar/bass line, the SAX, the robot voice, the Battles-like guitar line, and the overall feeling of boundless happiness. Like I entered a realm of robots pumping iron.

2. Alex GHollowSad Boy Alienation Music of the Year
In my sadder, masochistic times, I would listen to this song and whine along to the “I know, I’m hollow” part of the song. Just complete raw emotions here. Angsty guitars too.

3. AlvvaysArchie, Marry MeBest Windswept, Romantic Song of the Year
Growing up in Michigan, I didn’t really base romantic, windswept moments to happen on ocean beaches or mountains. I grew up imagining romantic moments on the sand dunes of Northern Michigan. So there. I picture it there.

4. Angel OlsenWhite FireBest Value Ticket To Smoldering Sadness Town
Damn. This song is the definition of smolder – like a stray candle in a dark room.

5. Ariel PinkBlack BallerinaBest Aeriolas, Baby
With a song this catchy, Ariel Pink was allowed to put in the weird monologue about aeriolas. And look, it won him an award. Here we go.

6. Ava LunaPrpl – Best Song Least Expected On A Weirdo Rock Record
Ava Luna’s Electric Balloon had some traces of soul and groove hidden beneath the janky rock n roll, but when “Prpl” comes on listeners are like WOOAAHH that voice, those grooves. This is some sexy stuff. And that’s it.

7. BabesATMOThe Song I Put On The Most Mixtapes
I seriously put this on at least five different CDs for people this year. I’ve gotten a few reactions, one being “It’s not a song I would listen to all the time, but it’s one that I would sit and read and drink wine to. Not everyone would like it, but I like it a lot, and I’m happy about myself for that.”

8. CryingBatang KilljoyRetro Throwback But Future Throttle Award
Good chiptune and righteous riffs make for a lovely little tune. Love this record.

9. Cymbals Eat GuitarsWarning Most Angsty Rock N Roll Award
I was once listening to this record in my office at WHUS and my friend was like “Yo this sounds like the music that people listened to in middle school.” Which prompted me to think about the music I listened to in middle school.
It was Evanescence.

10. Death GripsHave A Sad CumSong Name I Saw On The Most Shirts This Year
This album also won the “Best Bjork Feature” award. Have a sad cum, bb.

11. Flying Lotus (ft. Kendrick Lamar)Never Catch MeSong Most Likely to Air-Bass To
This was the best thing I could think of, but that bass breakdown after Kendrick lights the world on fire on this track is killer.

12. Frankie CosmosSad 2Best Ugly Cry Song
He was just a dog. 😥

13. Future IslandsSeasons (Waiting On You)Triumph Of The Year // Best Dancing
Listened to this song before boarding a plane I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to get on after one of the best weeks of my life. It was one of the most relieving moments of my life, and Future Islands pushed me through it. Highly recommended. Not American Airlines though, fuck them. SONG OF THE YEAR

14. Holly HerndonChorusSong That Made Me Feel Like A Piece Of Software
This is one of those songs that makes me feel intoxicated while listening. Herndon channels some R+7 0PN on this track and it rules. The manic, spaced out groove of the “chorus” is absolutely insane and has had me coming back to it. Also that vocal manipulation, though. SONG OF THE YEAR

15. Hooray For EarthSay EnoughMost Bittersweet Chorus
Something about this chorus + melodic progression just sticks with me so much. The chorus is so huge and bombastic, but for some reason the last line of it, “Is it going alright?” seems to reach back down to the human level in the thick of a tornado.

16. How To Dress WellWords I Don’t Remember Song I Do The Diva Hand Motions To
You know what I’m talking about, that thing that singers do with their hand when they wiggle around with the pitch on certain parts? I hate that. But for some reason this song makes me do it. It also wins the Sassy Head Shake award.

17. Hundred WatersCavityBest Song I Said “Oh Shit” To When I Heard It Live
I heard this song on the sound system before I saw St. Vincent and I said “Oh shit I love this song” out loud to my friend. It’s so damn good. I also said it when I saw them live, because the depth of the bass surprised me. One of those “rattle everything in your pockets” bass booms. Dope.

18. IceageAbundant LivingBest Use of Mandolin in a 2014 Punk Song
I love when there’s a melody in a song that you just start singing without realizing you’re singing it. That’s the case here. That fuckin’ mandolin. Having a folky upbringing, I have endless respect for the mando. It makes it have a retro feel to the song as well. This album also had a rusty violin solo, which is beyond dope.

19. ILoveMakonnenTuesday (ft. Drake)Song for the Squad (.づ▣ ͜ʖ▣)づ
When I first heard this song, I didn’t like it. I thought it was a dumb song. But after having the phase “goin’ up on a Tuesday” stuck in my head for months, I had to accept it into my life as the song to define my newer friends and the parties I’ve been going to. Cool way to end college.

20. Jessica Lea MayfieldPure StuffBest Guitar Tone to Bite Lower Lip To
Are you serious, though? This guitar tone is bonkers. So low and dripping with sludge, the slow, bright vocals shouldn’t fit as well as they do, but it’s perfect. This song rules.

21. Kero Kero BonitoSick BeatBest Use of Super Mario 64 in 2014
The minute I heard this song I said “Damn that’s from Super Mario 64. Wow.” The mix of video game sounds and Japanese/English lyrics makes for a weird, nerdy, boss tune.

22. LulucWithout A FaceBest Fall/Winter Morning Song
I tuned into this album late, unfortunately, because it has some of the best melancholy, delicate music of the year. Also the people are angels. Just so lovely and makes me want it to start snowing.

23. LVL UPDBTSBest Rock Song That Makes Me Think of Senior Year of College
Probably the song on the newest LVL UP record that goes the hardest, which is also my favorite. Badass guitars, etc. For some reason it makes me think of my college experience.

24. Mac DeMarco Chamber Of ReflectionMakes Me Feel Like A Groovy Wizard Award
This song also gets the award for “Introducing me to Yellow Magic Orchestra,” but Groovy Wizard is obviously better. I’m a groovy wizard, gonna put a spell on ya.

25. MerchandiseGreen LadyPUT THE TEAM ON DA BACK THO Award
In my opinion, this song single-handedly carried the Merchandise album. There were some other pretty good songs, but this one, along with “Telephone,” added some much needed dynamics to the album that seemed to be all one tempo & key.

Warm Visions’ Top Albums of 2014

bestalbums2014This list marks the fifth year end album list of mine posted on this blog! Woooo. If one wanted to get into heavy specifics, I did post my 2009 list on here, but that was after I had posted it on Facebook first, before I had my blog. SO I’M STILL RIGHT. I know people care that much to point that out for me.

Here are some bullets that make this list a bit more interesting than my other lists, in my opinion:

  • I spent all of 2014 as Music Director at my radio station, meaning I had a full year of people basically selling me records to listen to. This caused me to have new albums pouring into my life through work and leisure.
  • I made more music-minded friends this year at the radio station as well as people at other radio stations across the country. My other MD friends would help me catch records I might have missed in the thick of CMJ stuff, while my newer UConn friends would turn me onto more local projects that are totally cool and are gonna blow up.
  • Thought this year was pretty weak on the hip-hop front, with only Run The Jewels, Shabazz Palaces, Death Grips & Freddie Gibbs breaking onto my list. Ratking, Clipping. & Underachievers were also really good, but didn’t make my Top 50.
  • The albums I was hotly anticipating at the start of the year either blew me out of the water or left little impression on me. Hundred Waters, St. Vincent, Aphex Twin & Ty Segall all amazed me while Beck, Cloud Nothings, Tune-Yards & Real Estate really didn’t do too much for me by the end of the year.
  • This year a ton of smaller labels came surging into my list, with multiple appearances from Orchid Tapes and Double Double Whammy records.
  • I connected with lyrics a bit more this year, perhaps it’s a sign of me growing up or something. I dunno. Many of the lyrical themes dealt with growing up and other twenty-something bullshit. Maybe that’s why.
  • Most recent additions – Ariel Pink, Mitski, Dean Blunt & Run The Jewels.
  • Check out the honorable mentions list if you haven’t already // you want to yell at me about not listening to an album.
  • HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!

Mr. Twin Sister – “Out Of The Dark”

This song. This album.

NEXT LEVEL. Mesmerized.

“I am a women but inside I’m a man, And I want to be as gay as I can.”

“What ever happened to poor, dear me? Never see that face again.”

“You’re pushing on my identity, how much longer do I need to be, this version of me.”

Warm Visions’ Favorite EPs of 2014

besteps2014I know some people would put EPs on a Top 50 Albums list, which I’m fine with, but I’m pretty okay with making another list entirely since I like making lists. Also because I think it’s unfair to judge full-length albums against a tiny project that may be incomplete, what have you. Here we go:

10. Diarrhea Planet – Aliens In The Outfield
9. Doss – S/T
8. Julianna Barwick – Rosabi
7. Institute – Salt
6. Speedy Ortiz – Real Hair
5. Girlpool – S/T
4. Movement – S/T
3. Allison Crutchfield – Lean Into It
2. Crying – Second Wind
1. Viet Cong – Cassette

Assorted Thoughts:

Viet Cong rules. I loved Women (RIP Chris Reimer) and this group really continues the tradition of their sound but varies it up enough to make them unique. The song “Structureless Design” is so fucking badass. The moment where the song just breaks and there’s a flurry of messy guitars and march-like bass… CHILLS EVERY TIME.

Crying actually reissued their Get Olde EP and released Second Wind with it. I considered it to be a double EP and I chose the new stuff to be in there. Fantastic chiptune. WOOO.

Still kicking myself I didn’t get to see Girlpool at CMJ. Especially after I’ve listened to their EP so many times. Watch for them to take over 2015.

The Julianna Barwick EP is actually something she made in conjunction with a Dogfish Head beer of the same name, which was brewed with rose and wasabi, thus giving it the name “Rosabi.” I’m an absolute sucker for Julianna Barwick AND Dogfish Head, so the addition was easy.

Very rock heavy on this list, with Diarrhea Planet, Institute, Speedy Ortiz, Girlpool & Viet Cong all being primarily guitar-based bands. Electronic got a good showing from Doss & Movement – two very different projects but both fall into the very large realm of “electronic.” Crying and Allison Crutchfield fall into the indie rock/pop punk/super small budget band category, if you can even make that a category. Then Julianna Barwick is alone again, but you can’t put her in a box so take that.

Warm Visions’ Honorable Mentions of 2014

honorablementions2014Here are some albums that were at one point in my Top 50 list or came out late in the year and didn’t get to crack into it. Here we go:

  • Alvvays – Alvvays
  • Beck – Morning Phase
  • Cymbals Eat Guitars – Lose
  • Hiss Golden Messenger – Lateness of Dancers
  • Jessica Lea Mayfield – Make My Head Sing…
  • King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – I’m In Your Head Fuzz
  • Ratking – So It Goes
  • Sturgill Simpson – Metamodern Sounds In Country Music
  • Sun Kil Moon – Benji
  • Tacocat – NVM
  • Timber Timbre – Hot Dreams
  • Tony Molina – Dissed & Dismissed
  • Two Inch Astronaut – Foulbrood
  • Vashti Bunyan – Heartleap
  • The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dream

The most recent addition to that bunch is the Two Inch Astronaut, which came out last week. It’s on Exploding In Sound, which instantly gains points in my book, plus it has them riffs. It was an NPR First Listen for a reason.

The album that I thought I would hate and I turned out really liking was the Sturgill Simpson Metamodern Sounds In Country Music. At surface level, it’s just another country record, which would make some people I know cringe in their pants, but it’s actually a fuckin’ badass record with great, interesting guitar work and vocals similar to Future Islands at some points. I definitely almost passed it up, but decided to take a listen once again when I saw him perform on Conan. Definitely not a mistake there.

Sun Kil Moon & The War On Drugs are on the same list. Ranked the same. I know a bunch of people swear by both of those acts, but both of them got pushed out of the Top 50. They were meant to be together, I guess ;).

Beck was able to stick around in my list circuit by holding onto an honorable mention spot. He’s debatably my all-time favorite musician, but was never able to even crack my Top 5 when it was out in the beginning of the year. It has some great tracks on it for sure, but was never able to hold me throughout the entire year. Seeing him live this year was one of the best experiences of my life, though.

Alvvays is probably my #51, but don’t tell anyone.

Ratking only hip hop album on the honorable mentions list, I hope more show up on the Top 50!

High population of folk/country/singer songwriter dudes on here: Beck, Hiss Golden Messenger, Sun Kil Moon, Sturgill Simpson Timber Timbre & Vashti Bunyan. I’m slowly gaining some more appreciation for stuff like this, I guess.
