AMTHST – “Let It Go” [2016]

If you aren’t ready to get real sensual, then please prepare yourself. AMTHST is comprised of rapper Droop-E and singer Nite Jewel, a rather unlikely pairing that has yielded extremely luxurious results.

Sarah Neufeld – “Where The Light Comes In” [2016]

“Where The Light Comes In” is the last track on Sarah Neufeld’s great new album, The Ridge, and it leaves the album off on a slightly melancholic but overwhelmingly peaceful note. The instrumental song carries an air of closure, easily willing the listener to close their eyes and breathe deeply without the use of overt language or gimmicks. This feeling of relaxation is especially relevant after the emotional turmoil the music went through during the first seven songs on the record, which for the most part are blistering fast displays of speed & skill.

This is without a doubt some of the most sublime music I’ve heard this year. The Ridge is a treasure in 2016. Definitely check it out / support the artist when you can.

Alexander Lewis – “Dangerous” [2016]

Holy smokes! This is a brand spankin new track. I really don’t know a lot about this guy, but I feel like all you need to know is how hard this track slaps. So yeah, just go ahead and get sucked in. I bet we’re gonna start seeing this guy’s name around a lot more in 2016 and 2017.

Grave Babies – “Over And Under Ground” [2013]

One of my favorite tracks of 2013 and definitely one of my favorite tracks of this decade so far. Grave Babies tapped into a type of grimy, visceral energy I haven’t heard many other bands achieve these days on track. I remember getting the album, Crusher, while I was at a radio conference taking place in a really gross hotel. Like this hotel was gross. It was only fitting that I listened to this overblown mess of an album there first rather than somewhere else.

Frankie Rose – “Know Me” [2011]

This song will probably always be perfect in my eyes.

The Field – “It’s Up There” [2011]

Sometimes shuffle betrays you. Sometimes you skip song after song until you find one you always listen to, thus making the whole “shuffle and shake up the routine” thing totally moot. In this case, it was not bad to me. It brought me back to The Field’s great 2011 album Looping State Of Mind, the first I had heard from the German electronic artist.

I was introduced the The Field in a place where I was introduced to so many different kinds of music: in my radio station’s New Music Committee. Every week, people would take CDs to review for the station so they could be properly marked with FCC violations, focus tracks and with recommendations of artists with a similar sound. The committee meeting was where everyone talked about the CDs they reviewed that week with the rest of the group and determined where things will go in the library. All boring stuff, I know.

This album was reviewed during one of the first New Music Committee meetings I went to and needless to say I was pretty stumped. Weird electronic music on the radio? Who would want to listen to this? Either way, I ripped it onto my computer because I wanted to look cool and ended up liking it a bit. Later, thanks to name recognition, I found myself immediately drawn to The Field’s 2007 album, From Here We Go Sublime, and pushed Looping State off to the wayside.

Now here we are, February 2016 and “It’s Up There,” off the 2011 album Looping State Of Mind comes on and I’m taken aback – how did I not know these hot, hot grooves are hidden within my collection of The Field? All I had remembered were the icy melodies of From Here We Go Sublime and the mechanical throbbing of The Field’s last album, 2013’s Cupid’s Head. But to hear such a groovy, disco-indebted bass groove like this in a Field song? Definitely wasn’t expecting it. It’s all about the bass here, to be honest. The bass is what makes it the future disco that it is. There’s a little bit of rhythm guitar sulking in the shadows as well, but the bass – HOO! It’s hot, baby! It’s gettin’ real hot in here! It’s Up There!

Sarah Neufeld – “The Ridge” [2016]

Sarah Neufeld, one half of one of my favorite albums from 2015, Never Were The Way She Was with the other half being Colin Stetson, is putting out a solo record this year called The Ridge. This new song brings the exact half I loved about Never Were to the front and center, which is Neufeld’s feverish violin playing. The other half that was present on Never Were, Stetson’s demonic saxophone grunts, however, are missing, thus making the track lack the brilliant foil that was found on the 2015 album.

However however, even without Stetson’s saxophone this track is still bursting with a type of euphoric intensity that not a lot of modern music has these days besides certain types of post rock or modern classical compositions. Neufeld’s violin playing is at a steady, rapid pace here, rising and falling in dynamic and octave like ocean currents, while drums accentuate the waves by having them slap against a sonic cliffside at each of the melodic crests. They also quietly bubble in the beginning of the track, egging the ferocity of the violin playing right out of the gate.

This percussion is an element that was not present on Never Were, which provides a whole new lens to contrast Neufeld’s violin playing. I’m not saying that the song would be boring with just her slamming the strings, but I’m all about the juicy clash of sounds. Two different elements coming together in a heated dance makes for a much more engaging song, in my mind. I also cannot deny that there’s a goliath bass saxophone-like texture that shows up at the halfway point in the track, which might indeed be Stetson, or maybe it’s another source, but either way – it’s huge. It’s awesome.

Another piece on this song that was not featured as prominently in Never Were are Neufeld’s vocals, which come in near the end of the song. They’re very feathery; delicately raining down from above the sonic sea, as if her words are the wind whispering in the trees after the storm. In a way they sound like a more direct Julianna Barwick – they share some characteristics for sure.

Overall, I’m very excited for this album. As a fellow violin player myself, I love to hear the instrument used in nonconventional settings such as this. I know I’m already a fan of her playing, so I’m sure the only thing that’s in the air on my enjoyment of the album is her use and variation of sonic and melodic counterpoint throughout. If she does that, I’m sure this album will make it very high into my favorites of 2016. But for right now, listen to this song real loud and get lost in it. It’s a simple pleasure you can give yourself today.

Mt. Si – “Oh” [2016]

The most saccharine, lovely and blissful synth pop of 2016 so far. Mt. Si are a dreamy supergroup formed by members of Superhumanoids, Kisses & Classixx and have just released their first EP, Limits, last Friday 02/05/16. I think you can stream the whole thing right now but here’s just a little taste to whet your palate.

Smith Westerns – “Smile” [2011]

On Sunday nights I usually troll through my music library to see what I want to listen to on my train rides to NYC & when I’m being a data entry prodigy at work. This process usually keeps me up way later than I should be, but it does take me down varying paths of memory lane. Hence why a lot of my individual song posts on here have an associated memory attached to them.

“Smile” is taking us to my senior year of high school, but specifically my  graduation day. I remember driving myself home from the event while listening to this song, which made me feel real nostalgic and a kind of sad happy, since I had a burned copy of the album in my car that I would listen to pretty much the entire year. It’s weird that I’m feeling nostalgic about a moment based on high school nostalgia, but that doesn’t matter.

Anyways, this album & this song in particular really spoke to me as an angsty teen ready to get out of high school. I was going to move away from all my friends and family to the unknown state of Connecticut in two months, meaning the world was basically ending. But now I’m almost a year out of college and I still can see where I was coming from back then: this album is bursting with youthful energy, which makes sense since Smith Westerns were almost all teens when they made this. It’s super breezy & fun, even on tracks like “All Die Young,” which despite the macabre title, turns into a light, sing-songy track that takes the impending stress of death off a bit. It’s just so refreshing and laid back, so easy to love.

Another note – after four years of not really listening to this album all the way through, I forgot how the instrumental energy on here is spectacular. The guitars are top notch, expertly channeling all the coolest parts of classic rock, occasionally dipping into the corny, but to great effects. Songwriting overall is also top-notch. Some of the finest pop rock songs I’ve ever heard, no doubt. It makes sense that one of the guitarists of this band, Max Kakacek, has gone on to form another band that I love dearly called Whitney which uses some of this same great energy. Chicago-based bands, man. They’re some of the best. Midwest is the best.

In the end, I’m here up late again on a Sunday night / Monday morning writing about music. I’m probably going to be up longer searching for more music to put on my phone, but who knows. We’ll all know if we see another post on here shortly after this one. It’s supposed to snow tomorrow. I hope I don’t miss my train. Thanks for reading.

DIIV – “Mire (Grant’s Song)” [2016]

FULL DISCLOSURE: I promote this album & band to radio stations at my job. I loved this band before the job though, so I think it’s real love, but hey, if you wanna get political about it, here’s the little tag for ya.

By and far my favorite song on the new DIIV album, even though I think all of it is pretty dang fantastic. I love Cole’s breakaway from the cool, subdued vocals that he has on almost all the other tracks of the album in a big way, by screaming his lungs out at the apex of the song. The whole song is brooding and boiling with energy. The smeared guitars are creating tons of havoc all over the track while the drums add madness to the chaos, occasionally filling in a rapid succession of quick hits. It’s nuts – real crazy n cool.
