The Rebirth of Detroit

Hello all,

You don’t normally see posts about hip-hop here, but when you do, they’re usually ones of great proportion. Here we have the “Rebirth of Detroit” project, featuring artists of Detroit rapping/doing their thing over the work of the late great Detroit beat-wizard J-Dilla.

I am really excited about this project, since I was born in Detroit and feel a strong allegiance towards the great city. Sure, it is a largely negative light right now, but in my opinion, Detroit can make a turnaround. Soon.

Below, watch a video of one of the songs on Rebirth, featuring Danny Brown, one of Detroit’s most prominent rappers. The song is dope, Danny Brown’s aggressive style is matched perfectly with the beat.

Have a good day!

Fang Island Announces New Album: “Major”

One of my favorite bands of 2010, Fang Island, has now announced that they will follow up their self-titled 2010 debut this year with an album called “Major.” If this album is anything like their previous one, which I really hope it is, it’s definitely going to be dominating my summer playlist for sure.

No official songs have been released yet, but you can check out the track list below along with a song from their previous LP and trailer for the album, depicting candy, broken things and guitars. Seems about right. Major is out 7/24 on Sargent House.

TRACKLIST:

Sisterly
Seek It Out
Make Me
Never Understand
Asunder
Dooney Rock
Regalia

Radical Tracks: Purity Ring, Fiona Apple and Beck

Hello again.

Here, we have three new tracks from artists I absolutely love. Seriously. I love these groups/musicians. The first is from Purity Ring, a newish duo from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada that is a side project off of the hyper-pop group Born Gold, formerly GOBBLE GOBBLE. Their sound is characterized by really warped beats and light, female vocals that foil with the whole morphing, distorted beats and really creates an eerie but beautiful atmosphere. I actually pre-ordered their new album, coming July 24th on 4AD. I’m very excited.

Fiona Apple and Beck, on the other hand, are veterans to the music making game, both being stars of the 90’s music scene. Beck might be my favorite artist of all time, so when I heard that he had a new song out, even if it was a cover, I jumped on that. It’s really good, per usual all Beck songs. As is the Fiona Apple track, which is impressive. She hasn’t been in the music making game since about 2004 with her album “Extraordinary Machine.”

Check these out! Do yourself a favor!

Radical Tracks: Record Store Day Edition and More!

Saturday, the 21st of April, was Record Store Day, where if you don’t know, a bunch of bands and labels release exclusive content that is only available on vinyl on that day. This means that many record stores are flooded with shoppers clawing at the hottest items of the day. This year, it was definitely the Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends, St. Vincent’s “KROKODIL” single, Gorillaz “DoYaThing” single and probably Feistodon, a split with Feist covering a song by Mastodon and vice versa. Thankfully, I found a bunch of the most lusted after records online, so it’s like I have them here! Let’s check out the best tracks off of them!

The Flaming Lips ft. Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band – “Do It!”

The Flaming Lips ft. Erykah Badu – “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face”

St. Vincent – KROKODIL & GROT

Beach House – Equal Mind

Amen Dunes – Ethio Song

The Men – A Minor

Hot Chip – Night and Day

New Build – Behind the Shutter

Have a nice day!

Radical Album: Death Grips – “The Money Store”

Death Grips – The Money Store

The thrash rap/experimental/awesome collective from Sacramento, Death Grips, is back with their first of two releases of the year for Epic Records and this one is going to be tough to beat. The previous outing that we heard from Death Grips was last year’s polarizing “Exmilitary” which I found a bit palatable, but it was a bit too jagged for me to dive right in. Some of the songs, though, were instant favorites like “Guillotine” (IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES IT GOES YAH) and “Takyon (Death Yon).”

In this outing, however, the songs are more accessible but the original raw energy that drove the past album is still there. In fact, the energy is even more prevalent in this album, I think. In the past effort, it seemed splayed out and generally unorganized; but here the hatred and bloodlust is refined into a diamond-tipped point to stab right into the hearts of the listeners. The song “The Cage” has a speaker blasting beat that is purely infectious, but the beat is added in and dropped at the perfect times such that the listener is pushed along for the ride in a way that they aren’t totally offended by the song.

Death Grips is comprised of frontman Stefan Burnett aka “MC Ride,” drummer Zach Hill (of Hella) and synth/beat maker Andy Morin. Burnett brings fiery, unabashed confidence and anger to the game, which gives the verses a quality of toxicity, like he’s spitting them out on one of his many enemies.

He isn’t the only one that’s creating this realm of hatred and raw energy, though. Hill’s drumming is manic and hard hitting and seeing them live will really show that the recordings don’t do justice for his drumming skill. He beats those drums like they owe him money. Then Morin’s synth textures that he lays down are those you could find in any doomsday setting, usually extremely bloated with digital stretch marks and decaying pieces of techno-waste that sound like they were found in an old abandoned house in the desert. This stuff, musically, is like an adrenaline-pumping cyborg of death. Awesome.

Not all of the songs are doom-glazed pieces of filth, though, the song “I’ve Seen Footage” is a fantastic song to do things to because of it’s extremely physical beat and an overall exciting and danceable atmosphere. It might just make me get up and do things instead of sit around all day listening to music and writing album reviews! Another song that doesn’t completely drench itself in techno-melt is the great song “Hacker” which features a sweet drum line, blasting synth hits and has strains of “Losing My Edge” by LCD Soundsystem in it, surprisingly, as he’s listing off things he’s doing and name dropping about Gaga, Apple Stores and Linens n’ Things. Fantastic song.

This album really exceeded my expectations in a lot of ways. I didn’t think I would like this album as much as I do right now. The whole thing has this unbeatable confidence that no other group has brought to the game this year, when it comes to hip-hop anyways. Most of the other stuff deals with laying back and smoking weed, having women and reppin’ the location of residence. This, on the other hand, just brings an air of destruction and pure, molten energy and doesn’t quit that throughout the entire thing. I’m definitely going to recommend this to anyone who loves speaker-blasting thrash-fests and those who can handle a heaping full of spiciness sprayed into their ears. Pain is pleasure.

SCORE: 9.3/10

REC’D TRACKS:

Get Got, The Fever (Aye Aye), Blackjack, I’ve Seen Footage, System Blower, The Cage, Punk Weight, Hacker.

Have a great day!

Album Stream: Death Grips – The Money Store

Experimental/hardcore/awesome rap group from Sacramento, Death Grips, have just posted their latest full-length, The Money Store on their Soundcloud, ready for you to stream it in all of it’s speaker-blasting, ear-drum obliterating glory. Characteristics of Death Grips’ music include, apocalyptic visions, abrasiveness akin to breaking a bottle over your head and eating the shards or finding a shark, killing it and then going into a demented action movie directed by Darren Aronofsky or something. All of this is good, by the way. Download a few of the tracks below, including the great “I’ve Seen Footage” and “The Fever (Aye Aye).”
