Oh mah lawd, y’all. Here it is. My REVIEW. of. PLASTIC BEACH.

I know, I know, not a big deal. You’d rather read some review by Pitchfork or Under the Radar or something along those lines. Sure, that’s cool. Professional, cool. Alright. BUT, this is the people’s take. Haha, wow this is a tangent.

So let’s dive right in! Get it? Cause it kind of has a nautical theme? Okay, that was dumb.

Just FYI, there are no “Feel Good Inc’s” or “Clint Eastwood’s”, or other stickout-super-single-dance-awesomeness-singles, but it makes up for this with it’s overall lushness and consistency.

It starts with an enigmatic orchestral intro that is actually quite nice. It is also the music that started the “tour” of the Plastic Beach. Next is the groove starter, with Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach. This song features Snoop Dogg and I feel like even though it sounds sort of silly with all his “Crack-A-Lackin'”, it fits well as the second song on the album. If they placed this anywhere else in the album, it would be a real buzzkill. This really gets the momentum going for the rest of the album to use. Snoop Dogg makes a nice greeter. I hope he starts working at a Meijer or something: “Welcome to the World of Meijer, dawg”. Thanks, Snoop Dogg. You keep being you.

Alright, so next is White Flag featuring Bashy, Kano, and the National Orchestra for Arabic Music. Bashy and Kano pass some sweet raps to eachother while the Orchestra plays while they take a break. The Orchestra really fits well with this “Island theme” and creates a nice picture in your head. Bashy and Kano’s raps are nice at the beginning, but get kind of old after awhile. Some great stuff on the way.

This is about where the album really starts moving, and the album’s heart starts pumping out good sauce. Rhinestone Eyes, which really is a really nice track for Albarn’s “2D” slower vocals. The lyrics are nice, and the amount of electronic effects are just right. After is Stylo, which you probably all know (if you have read my blog previously). Mos Def laying down some crackling rhymes, Albarn sweet vocals, and Bobby Womack’s crazy preachin’ voice really gets you into it. Then Superfast Jellyfish, where De La Soul raps about breakfast. Always fun. Really reminds me of a 60’s commercial. Yes, even with the rap.

After Jellyfish is one of my favorite songs on the album, Empire Ants featuring Little Dragon. When Albarn is singing, it reminds me of their song Hong Kong, which I also really like. Then when Little Dragon comes in, the sound is beautiful. The lead singer, Yukimi Nagano, has a great voice for this sort of song, and the lyrics are sweet. After that is a great electro-jam out named Glitter Freeze. Ireally like all the effects put into it, makes me think of the future. Next is Some Kind of Nature featuring Lou Reed. Lou Reed was the lead singer of the great band The Velvet Underground. This song is really groovy and Reed’s voice fits really well into the mix.

On Melancholy Hill is next, and personally, I didn’t really like this one as much. I don’t know. It just doesn’t do it for me on this one. BUT, it gets right up on it’s feet with Broken, another one of my favorites. The beginning reminds me of Pikmin. But Albarn’s voice is perfect on this one, and the chorus is very emotional. I also like the cheesy sythesized strings during the chorus. What. It’s good.

Next is Sweepstakes featuring Mos Def and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Mos Def is awesome on this track, and it all feels really natural. The build until the end is excellent, too. At first I didn’t really get it, but after a few listens I found I got it. After is Plastic Beach featuring Mick Jones and Paul Simonon. This one, again, I didn’t really get at first listen. I really like the chorus with the bleeps and blips in the background. Then is To Binge, where they bring back Little Dragon. Nagano’s vocals are ghostly and Albarn’s are normal, I guess. Good song.

The second to last song is Cloud of Unknowing, where Bobby Womack returns for a very soulful performance. Awesome. Last is Pirate Jet, which is a Velvet Underground-sounding closer. This is sort of like the last song on Demon Days which is named Demon Days. With the sort of chorus and trailing ending; the lyrics have good placement as well, so I guess it works. HA!

WOW! It’s over. Sorry if I typed too much, I just had some descriptions I had to word out. So in my opinion, this ranks up there with the other Gorillaz albums, and it doesn’t disappoint me in the least. My score is 89%. This was a great listen, and I’m really glad it didn’t let me down after about 3 months of anticipation.

Okay, so this is my third review. Sorry, that I keep on counting them, it’s just that it’s so freakin’ SWEET!

SURRUS BUSNESS NOW.

Actually, this album I am reviewing isn’t that serious though. Fang Island by Fang Island is (I think) Fang Island’s DEBUT album. Fang Island is I guess a more “prog” band then anything else. Most of their songs are awesome instrumentals and when the vocals are added, the quality of the atmosphere of the music is raised. Filled with vocal harmonies and high-flying guitar crunches, Fang Island does not disappoint on their first LP.

On this review, I am not going to go in depth with the tracks, because they all form into eachother and sound pretty similar. HEY, I bet you’re now thinking that because they sound similar, it is BAD. Well, not necessarily. These songs are surprisingly fresh, and their sound doesn’t get old easily. Fang Island described their sound as “everyone high-fiving everyone” or “when everything feels just right and everything is coming together”, which is always a good time.

Those comparisons are really good comparisons to the first half of the album, with the fizzling pops and bleeps of Dreams of Dreams which effortlessly transitions into Careful Crossers, a montage of awesome lobster wrestling. Just picture that. Haha. Okay, back on track.

Next up is Daisy, which I believe is the albums first single. It begins with some unintelligible jibber, and leads with some kick-butt guitar lines. I feel like high-fiving people just listening to it. VIDEO That transitions into my favorite track, Life Coach. At first, I saw the video, and marveled in it’s strangeness and non-computerized slow motion. VIDEO. Then I started listening to the song, and I love it’s beat and the build. Also, at the end, just think of a great event just coming into place: getting an aced test back, a 1st place marathon, or even walking to a grocery store. Awesome.

That transitions into Sideswiper, a rockin jam that again, promotes high fiving. After is The Illinois, which is pretty much an extension of Sideswiper. (PS, this is the other half of the album right hurr). In Treeton, the vocals sound sort of folkyish, like some bands you probably know. Davey Crockett, the albums longest song at 5:48, is a little too long for it’s own good. It starts with a very slow intro that builds like sand in an hourglass. It doesn’t reach it’s peak until there is only about one minute left in the song. Dang.

Thankfully, the listener is woken from the daze of Davey Crockett by Welcome Wagon, which has some sweet guitar lines and harmonies. The last song is Dorian, which is just a nostalgic extension off of Welcome Wagon. Good ender, not in a flashy crazy way like the rest of the album is, more like playing outside all day and then your parent calling you back in for bedtime.

Now if you got the deluxe edition, you could get the Yeasayer remix of the song “Absolute Place” which is on one of Fang Island’s previous EPs. It’s okay. Also included is the video for Daisy. All of this, on iTunes, is $5.99. Holy crap Trevor, $5.99 for 11 songs AND a sweet video? Yes, dear reader. That is all it costs to have people high-five in your ears, which sounds a lot more unpleasant than it actually is.

Well wouldya look at that. I reviewed every track. Oh well. Guess it’s inevitable. SO, tracks to look up: Dreams of Dreams+Careful Crossers, Daisy, Life Coach, Sideswiper, and Welcome Wagon. I hope you have a good day! OH YEAH. I give this album an 83%. Pretty good, pretty good. Okay, I’m done.

Second album review ever. Let’s do this. Also, I know this album came out awhile ago, I just haven’t gotten to it.

Okay, so up next is Gorilla Manor by Local Natives. On Stereogum and Pitchfork they hyped it a lot, and provided two free mp3s, Sun Hands and Camera Talk. I like both of these tracks, their sound reminds me somewhat of Fleet Foxes, but not as folky. ‘Tis good.

On this album, I am not going in-depth track by track, because there are 14 songs which is a little large for me right now. I’ll just give a little synopsis for each.

By the way, I’m not going to score the tracks individually, you’ll just have to go by my overall recommendations at the end and my bad descriptions of the tracks the way through.

Wide Eyes – Nice vocal harmonies, good opener for the album.

Airplanes – Favorite track on the album, great lyrics and overall melody.

Sun Hands – More energetic song, I really like this one as well.

World News – Again, nice harmonies and lyrics.

Shape Shifter – Nice chorus and slick melodies. Sounds like a song on the radio.

Camera Talk – More “rock-y” than the other songs, very nice.

Cards & Quarters – Great harmonies, very soulful.

Warning Sign – Talking Heads cover, very fun song, great bass during the chorus.

Who Knows Who Cares – Sounds like Portugal the Man, nice drums effects.

Cubism Dream – Nice vocals, a bit jazzy even.

Stranger Thread – Running drums and strings at the beginning-very nice.

Sticky Thread – Pretty calm song, and again, great harmonies.Reminds me Grizzly Bear

Cool! Okay, so as you can see there are a lot of fantastic vocal harmonies, woozy guitars, and other things combine to make stuff that everyone will love.

I give THIS album an 87%. Yerp, an 87%. I pretty much love this entire album. Tracks that really shine to me are Wide Eyes, Airplanes, Sun Hands, Shape Shifter, Camera Talk, Cards and Quarters, and Who Knows Who Cares. BUT, you should just pick the whole thing up for yourself. Make your day. Alright, that is all.

Alright y’all, this is my first real album review. So bear with me here. To all who are reading anyways. Whatever. OKAY. So what we got here is Yeasayer’s Odd Blood. Overall, this album is fantastic. While I was listening, I was in a constant state of “what the heck? Is this possible? I have no idea what is going on, but I love it.” Well, I now know what is going on now. It is the sheer amazing-ness of a electronic-experiment-jam-craziness gumbo. All of the songs compliment eachother and fit well together. Imma’ gonna go through track bah’ track now.

1. The Children – This is definitely an opening track. Not much going on, mostly just lots of really low, droning beats and a Knife-esque vocal style(I don’t know what to compare that to, criticize me if you want. This track is obviously not as good as The Knife/Fever Ray, but you can get what I mean).  It’s pretty good, but the rest of the album just explodes with great. (6/10)

2. Ambling Alp – If you say my earlier post about this album, you saw my raving about Ambling Alp. It is SO good. So upbeat and danceable. Pretty uplifting lyrics, too: “Stick up for yourself son/Nevermind what anybody else done.” Very nice, Very nice. (10/10)

3. Madder Red – Another great track. Starts out more slow, but then gradually goes into another form with sweet sweeping chorus and verses and bright signing in the background. “I’m worth your time.” (9/10)

4. I Remember – Wow. One of my favorite tracks on the record. This is clearly a reminiscent love song (Haha, I Remember, duh). Keating’s vocals are clearly the greatest aspect of this song. His great range creates, once again, sweeping emotional melodies and personally, I freaked out when he went from high to low(ish). SO good. Just to let all you know, this is most definitely going to be on my best of the year mix. (10/10)

5. O.N.E. – If you read my other post about this album, this was featured as well. This is their second single from the album. You know how I said I didn’t like it as much as Ambling Alp? Well, after more listens, it gradually climbed the ranks. A very danceable-singable song, very up tempo I recommend it. (9/10)

6. Love Me Girl – This one took about two listens for it to “click” with me. At first I was just going through, and bunched it with the rest. But, as I listened to it more, I found the untapped greatness of this song. This song has so much going on it; Loons (yes the bird), Of Montreal-like vocals, synthesized voices, piano, slight Knife voices again, very insane and fun song. I really like this one. (10/10)

7. Rome – Lots of percussion and bass, which is nice. Gives it a steady beat which is a nice break after the slick Love Me Girl. Vocals and lyrics are very sharp on this one as well. I LIEK IT GUYZ (8.5/10)

8. Strange Reunions – There we go on that strange rhythm again. The clapping in the background keeps it kind of off-kilter along with the dizzying beats when the clapping is non-active. Cool guitar effects near the end of this one. (7/10)

9. Mondegreen – Very crazy song. Keeps things sort of unbalanced but it still gives a steady beat. The lyrics sound like a real pop song: “Everybody’s talkin bout me and my baby, making love to the mornin light” and sings like a “pop star” too. Reminds me of salsa, or something. It has sort of a Spanish/South American/Central American flair on it at some point. (7/10)

10. Grizelda – Great title. right? Makes me think of a witch. Great ending to the album, sort of winding it down from the craziness that has been created prior to it. It has some great Animal Collective-ish background voices during the chorus, which I enjoy. It really just has that “last song of the album” feel, and it embraces it well. (8/10)

Overall, I love this album. It will most definitely be in my top for this year. I will not forget this one. BUT my overall grade for this album is… a 93%!!! Dang, this thing was good. I am telling you, buy this now! If not the entire album, get Ambling Alp (which is free, here), I Remember, O.N.E., Love Me Girl, and Madder Red! Do it NOW! Feedback on your opinons! Yeah!
