Hundred Waters – “Particle” [2017]

One of my favorite bands from the last five years, Hundred Waters, look like they have a new album on the way with the release of song “Particle,” by far the most straightforward and obtusely bass-heavy song they’ve ever done. Nicole Miglis’ unique, weightless voice dances upon an instrumental that seems more fit for giant festival crowds rather than the intimate, organic + synthetic fusion the band usually wins me over with. However, the more I listen to it, the more I’m on board with it.

I’m imagining that this upcoming project is going to be more mainstream in sound, but overall shows off a great growth in the band’s songwriting that’s developed over the past three years. Their last album The Moon Rang Like A Bell, was my favorite album of 2014 so there are some unreal heights to live up to, but I’m really excited about this album, no matter how it sounds. Just happy this band is continuing to make music.

Kirin J. Callinan – “S.A.D.” [2017]

I doubt you’ll find a song from 2017 with a chorus as monstrous as this. Or a song with as many key changes. Can’t wait for the Kirin J. Callinan album, coming out June 9 on Terrible Records.

A Long Bow: Colleen’s ‘Everyone Alive Wants Answers’

For the first-ever A Long Bow, I wanted to write about Colleen’s Everyone Alive Wants Answers, an album that I started listening to pretty recently, but haven’t been able to wrench from my brain since. I’ve posted two tracks individually on my blog since then, but haven’t had the right amount of space to truly gush about this record the way I’d like to. I wouldn’t say it’s one of my all-time favorite records, but it’s unlike anything I’ve ever heard before and taps into a place in my brain that not many other records go.

Recommended Albums: April 2017

In this edition of Recommended Albums, Warm Visions sells out. Four out of ten records this month came from a major label or affiliate. I just received an oversized check in the mail for one trillion dollars from “Big Music Executive Man,” and in the memo it says “thanks for promoting our artists WV, you’ve saved the industry” so it looks like I’m all set. Aside from those big guys we have the rest, a bunch of whatever hum drum bands from small labels like uh Ninja Tune and XL?? Yeah ok, chump change. You’re lucky a blog of this stature is even paying attention to baby bands like you. Call me when you’ve got a song on an iPod commercial or something.

Colleen – “Goodbye Sunshine” [2003]

I’m a big fan of music that completely transforms time and space while listening. Colleen’s Everyone Alive Wants Answers is an album that puts the listener in one of those rotator contraptions and plays them their entire life in reverse at high speeds, or, portrays the gradual mental degradation of the listener’s mind, much like the music of The Caretaker. Disorienting, static-filled loops wrap themselves around the listener’s head, like a stereotypical hypnotic wheel. Sounds are flipped in reverse, slowed down and sped up to gross degrees, distorting the sound’s composition entirely. If you really want a modern comparison, think Radiohead’s “Like Spinning Plates,” but a weird, spindly version. Something you might hear Broadcast making.

I’ve posted about this album before, I’ll likely write a long piece about it someday. I really love it a lot.

Things are quickly passing us by and there’s nothing anyone can do to stop it.

Laurel Halo – “Jelly” [2017]

Laurel Halo has a new album called Dust coming out on June 23rd on Hyperdub. This is the first single, featuring vocals by Lafawndah and Klein, as well as Halo’s return to vocals. Last time we heard her voice on an album was 2012’s Quarantine, one of my all-time favorite albums. I have high hopes for this one!

Tirzah – “Inside Out” [2013]

Unsure how I’ve never featured this song on a standalone blog post, but here it is. This is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – “Magneto” [2016]

I was a big dummy last year and let this pass me by. I was a big dummy for many other reasons as well, but this is the one I’m fuming about at this moment. I’ve never really gotten into Nick Cave – his discography has always been daunting, especially since his music is so intense. I felt like the right entry point was consistently evading me. Staring at that wall of a discography, seeing all the praise for each one was a bit much. So when this album came, it was pushed down the pecking order due in part to my preference for other “more modern” stuff coming out at the same time, along with the nervousness to finally dive down the Nick Cave rabbit hole.

However, after watching the documentary One More Time With Feeling, which was made around the recording of this new album, Skeleton Tree, I feel like I’m ready to take the plunge into his library. Ever since I watched the film I’ve been listening to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds records, especially Skeleton Tree. He’s an incredible songwriter, lyrics and arrangement-wise. He’s able to tap into some kind of higher plane of existence on some of these songs. As silly as that statement sounds, I feel like I can’t hear any other musician making songs like these. I don’t even know the dude’s music that well and I’m saying that. “Magneto” is the song that stuck with me, but “Jesus Alone” is also terribly striking. Brilliant record.

Recommended Albums: March 2017

Thankfully for me, the music of March was so good it helped me forget about all of the crushing failures that have piled up in my life so far in 2017. There were even a few albums I had to cut off that were on here originally. There were also three high-profile indie rock records that failed to make too much of an impression on me from Real Estate, The Shins & Spoon, the latter being my favorite of the bunch. There was also a Drake album mixtape of songs in worldly styles he likes. It’s pretty consistent in being average, but like always, Young Thug saves the whole thing on a buzzer beater. But like I said at the beginning, March was very strong month. Top favorites from this month are Hurray For The Riff Raff, Jacaszek, Mount Eerie, Spirit Of The Beehive & Mono No Aware. Hope you find something you like.

Land Of Talk – “This Time” [2017]

Land Of Talk has an album seven years in the making coming out in May. I had never heard of the band before, but there are a lot of people out there madly excited for this thing. The first single, “Inner Lover,” didn’t impress me much. HOWEVER, this new song is really great. Powerful yet wistful vocals, a driving melody, somewhat folky vocal harmonies. Definitely for fans of say, Hop Along or Big Thief. I’ve already listened to it five times today, so I thought I’d share it here. Lastly, the incredible Sharon Van Etten contributes guest vocals on this one!

Life After Youth is out on May 19th on Saddle Creek.
